Mandatory Courses

The Mandatory Courses consist of 4 one-day courses which are a legal requirement for any new fishermen or those entering the Maritime Industry. Refresher funding is available to any experienced fishermen who have undertaken all mandatories (including Safety Awareness for Experienced Fishermen) wanting to renew their courses after 3 years. There is no funding available to New Entrants undertaking mandatory training unless they attend one of our fully funded 3 Week Courses. If you have any questions please enquire today!

  • STCW95 (PST) Personal Survival Techniques

    Duration 1 day

    Compliant with Regulation VI/1, paragraphs 1 and Section A-VI/1, paragraph 2.1.1 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended

    Overview The morning session consists of theory covering the use of Personal Flotation Devices's (PFD's), life rafts, lifesaving equipment & techniques, first aid for survival, hypothermia, long term survival, abandonment, life raft drill and swimming techniques. The afternoon session consists of a Sea Survival practical exercise in the pool with survival suites and life-raft.

    Fee £150.00*

    This course is funded under refresher funding to experienced fishermen holding their mandatory certificates for three years ago or longer.

    *If all four mandatory new entrant courses are taken in one block a £40 discount will be given, making the total cost to be £500.00.

  • STCW95 (EFA) Elementary First Aid

    Duration 1 day

    Compliant with Regulation VI/1, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/1, paragraphs 2.1.3 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended

    Overview This course covers Category C medical stores, basic first aid techniques, CPR, bandaging, etc. You will be trained basic first aid skills using a CPR Dummy and other practical, hands-on learning aids.

    Fee £120*

    This course is funded under refresher funding to experienced fishermen holding their mandatory certificates for three years ago or longer.

  • Seafish Health & Safety for New Entrants

    Duration 1 day

    Overview The theory covers observance of safe working practices, types of emergency, understanding Orders and Onboard Communications, prevention of pollution of the marine environment, contribute to effective human relationships on board a vessel.

    Fee £120.00*

    *If all four mandatory new entrant courses are taken in one block a £40 discount will be given, making the total cost to be £500.00.

  • Seafish Basic Fire Fighting

    Duration 1 day

    Overview The theory covers basic fire fighting techniques and instruction on use of various fire fighting equipment. The practical session covers use of firefighting appliances on real or simulated fires. Each candidate is required to take part in the practical, i.e. using extinguishers.

  • Seafish Safety Awareness for Experienced Fishermen

    Duration 1 day

    Requirements It is a mandatory requirement that all crews* complete the Safety Awareness and Managing Safety at Sea course.

    Overview Achievement of this certificate and all other mandatories will qualify fishermen to obtain funding for the Under 16.5m Skippers Ticket.

    Fee £120.00

    This course is funded under refresher funding to those who completed it three years ago or longer.

    *This course is to be taken between 6-24 months after completing the fishermen’s basic safety training.

STCW Courses

These STCW Courses are a legal requirement for anyone entering the Maritime Industry. The STCW Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities course is not relevant to the Commercial Fishing Industry. Refresher funding is available to any experienced fishermen who have undertaken all mandatories wanting to renew their STCW PST & EFA courses after 3 years. There is no funding available to New Entrants undertaking mandatory training unless they attend one of our fully funded 3 Week Courses. If you have any questions please enquire today!

  • STCW (PSSR) Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities

    Duration 0.5 day

    Compliant with Regulation VI/1, paragraphs 1 and Section A-VI/1, paragraph 2.1.4 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended.

    Overview Offers a basic introduction to safety procedures and accident prevention, informing them of the employment conditions and working environments at sea.

    Requirements This course is a mandatory minimum requirement for familiarisation, basic safety training and instruction for all seafarers but not including commercial fishermen.

Under 16.5m Skippers Ticket Courses

The Seafish Under 16.5m Skipper’s Certificates are recognised by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency for use on Small Commercial Vessels – Access thMarine Guidance Note (MGN) 411 documentation for details. Achievement of the Seafish Safety Awareness for Experienced Fishermen will qualify fishermen to obtain funding for the below courses. Refresher funding is also available to any experienced fishermen who have undertaken the Under 16.5m Skippers Ticket whose certificates are over 3 years old.   • Bridge Watch-Keeping (2 or 5 Day Navigation)

    Duration 2 or 5 days

    <16.5m Skippers' Ticket Module

    Overview This course covers aspects of basic navigation, collision avoidance regs., electronic navigational aids, buoy age, emergency procedures incl. flooding, fire, abandoning ship. Competence tested by assessment & simple multi-choice/written questionnaire.

  • Stability Awareness for Experienced Fishermen

    Duration 1 day

    <16.5m Skippers' Ticket Module

    Overview This course covers a range of stability problems through the method of theory and practical demonstrations with a scale model fishing vessel. Candidates required to pass the end of course assessment for certification.

  • RYA/VHF-GMDSS Short Range Radio

    Duration 1.5 day

    <16.5m Skippers' Ticket Module

    Overview This radio operator qualification authorises the holder to operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling on board any British vessel which is fitted with radio equipment. No prior knowledge is required, but 3 hours self-study prior to course commencement is required, and guidance for this will be given. Day 1 consists of use of marine radio including GMDSS, routine, distress, urgency & safety procedures. Day 2 consists of practical exercises using simulator equipment, and vhf radios, before practical assessment is undertaken.

    Fee £200.00* (to include mandatory RYA VHF Handbook £15, and exam/licence fee of £60)

  • 2 Day Engineering

    Duration 2 days

    <16.5m Skippers' Ticket Module

    Overview This course covers 4 stroke diesel engine theory. Fuel & air systems, turbo charging, exhaust & cooling systems, vessel operations & safety, maintenance, tools & equipment. Candidates required to pass the end of course assessment for certification.

    *This course is funded to fishermen undertaking the <16.5m Skippers ticket.

    Please note The 5 day course is now required for the Unrestricted Skippers ticket.

  • Advanced Stability for Experienced Fishermen

    Duration 1 day

    Overview This course covers advanced stability through the method of theory and practical demonstrations with a scale model fishing vessel. Candidates required to pass the end of course assessment for certification.

Seafish 3 Week Introduction to the
Commercial Fishing Industry (ICF)

The 3-week Introduction to Commercial Fishing course is for anyone who wants to start working on a commercial fishing vessel. Maritime Futures - 3 Week Introduction
to the Maritime Industry (IMI)

The Maritime Futures course is a 3-week introduction to working in the Maritime Industry.  The course gives candidates a basic knowledge and awareness of different activities that are commonplace aboard differing Maritime Vessels. Medical Requirements

Seafarers and other crew members: which medical certificate do you need?

  • You need a seafarer medical certificate (ENG1) if you are:

    • in charge of a ship, e.g. ship’s captain

    • serving on a merchant ship

    • a seafarer

    • working on a fishing vessel over 24m in length

    • working on a fishing vessel less than 24m in length, but are at sea for more than 72 hours or are operating more than 200 miles from the coastline of the UK or beyond the continental shelf

    • working on a fishing vessel of any size that is subject to inspection at a foreign port

    Any seafarer on board a ship must have an ENG1 (or equivalent) to work on a merchant vessel, or for any UK certificate of competency (CoC).

    Please note

    Most fishermen should now have an ENG1 Medical Certificate as from November 2023 all commercial fishermen will be required to have a medical.

    Fishermen working on an under 24m vessel that is NOT at sea for more than 72 hours and operates less than 200 miles from the coastline of the UK, will be required to have a ENG1 Medical or a ML5 (as an alternative to the ENG1) by the 30th November 2023.

  • You need an ML5 medical report and certificate if you are:

    • master of a non-seagoing passenger ship (Class IV or V)

    • master of a commercial non-seagoing vessel

    • master and crew of a small commercial vessel (under 24 metres, carrying no more than 12 passengers, going no more than 60 miles from shore)

    • crew or other employee (like a steward, security guard, caterer) on a domestic seagoing passenger ship (Class VI or VI(A)).

    The referee will take all of this information into account and make a final assessment of your fitness.
